This drink was first mentioned in documents of origin Nazari (ancient kingdom of Granada), but with greater consistency, for his reputation among sailors, in documents from Barbados in 1650. He was called “kill-devil” ( ‘kill-devil’) or “rumbullion” (a word of Devonshire, England, which means’ a great tumult ‘). In the French Caribbean colonies, was called “guildive” (changing “kill-devil”) and then “tafia”, a term African or indigenous. Already in 1667 it was called simply “Rum”, a term derived from the Spanish word rum (Arabic word for root) and the French rum (which derives from above). The first official mention of the word “rum” appear on a warrant issued by the Governor General of Jamaica dated July 8, 1661.

It also produces black rum.
Sugar cane was brought by the Arabs to Europe through Spain and cultivated mainly in the southern coasts, well-known today for possessing a climate suitable for all kinds of tropical crops, which took advantage of the Arabs to obtain sugar cane and other derivatives for pastry or certain types of beverages. In fact, is kept in the province of Granada trapiche the oldest in the world. In addition Arabs also brought to Spain, Europe, the process of distillation of alcohol with alembic (both words of Arabic origin). When the Christians conquered the kingdom of Granada Nazari, they imitate the true way of making a liqueur with fresh cane juice already practiced the Arabs and they in turn had copied from other cultures, so that the oldest rum which is known comes from Grenada.

The Spaniards took the helm in the Canary Islands and then to the Caribbean islands, mainly to Cuba, where the climate was much more appropriate and production of both sugar and rum, to be spent in the Canary Islands and in americas. When English and French, plus fans that the Spaniards to spirits high alcohol content, are installed in the West Indies, took the cultivation of sugar cane, to take sugar in their cities and begin to distill rum.

Some say that rum comes from Martinique, the warm Caribbean island also known as the “archipelago of Ron.” Others, however, claim that the cane was planted many years in Greece before the meeting of two worlds and that the early settlers brought to the exotic islands of the Antilles. Whatever the version, the truth is that since then has rum letter citizenship Caribbean and the Canary Islands and universal passport, thanks to its versatility happy to achieve union with other drinks, juices and liquors, as happened to snuff, home Persian, which is news from Roman times on the “strange habit of entering through the nose some ground sheet”, and that sign however is typical of many Caribbean countries, like Cuba’s famous cigars with “Cohiba”.
