Jamaican Rum History
Jamaican rum is an alcoholic beverage that is derived from sugar cane by fermentation, distillation and aging, usually in oak barrels. This drink was first mentioned in documents of origin Nazari (ancient kingdom of Granada), but with greater consistency, for his reputation among sailors, in documents from Barbados in 1650. He was called “kill-devil” ( ‘kill-devil’) or “rumbullion” (a word of Devonshire, England, which means’ a great tumult ‘). In the French Caribbean colonies, was called “guildive” (changing “kill-devil”) and then “tafia”, a term African or indigenous. Jamaican rum is characterized by having a very aromatic rum, and sometimes spices, which differs from others with ease. It also produces black rum.
Sugar cane was brought by the Arabs to Europe through Spain and cultivated mainly in the southern coasts, well-known today for possessing a climate suitable for all kinds of tropical crops, which took advantage of the Arabs to obtain sugar cane and other derivatives for pastry or certain types of beverages.
